What is a Men's Shed?
A concept originating from Australia, a Men's Shed is defined by the UK Men's Sheds Association (UKMSA) as a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy.
A Men’s Shed offers this to a group of such men where members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue.
They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction.
Although called a Men’s Shed, women are most welcome too.
There are currently over 400 established up and running men sheds across the country, with another 100 under development.
Members decide who attends and what projects they specialise in, subject to members skills and experiences. Also, opening times and sessions are decided and agreed with the members according to the demands of the group.
Members fill out a membership form and pay a yearly subscription charge and then an additional fee per session, depending on the group and its overheads.
'Shedders' can also join the UKMSA (UK Man Shed Association) which is currently £15.00 a year which would entitled them to have discounts with partners such as Triton Tools, Lumberjack tools and shed stores, as well as having the opportunity to vote at public meetings.
