News from the Garden
15/08/2018
The gardens of the Wells Almshouses are known for their beauty and have been benefiting this summer from the work of skilled volunteers. They come from the Heads Up mental health charity at South Horrington every fortnight to tend the greenery and flowers. To show their appreciation the residents presented the volunteers with a large homemade cake. If anyone would like to come and see these charming houses and walk around the beautiful gardens, they will be open to the public on Saturday, September 8, which is Heritage Open Day, from 11am to 4pm. There are two main sites for the 32 flats and cottages that make up the almshouses. Llewellyn’s Almshouses are on Priest Row and the Bubwith site can be accessed by walking through the grounds of St Cuthbert’s Church to the back of the churchyard, or through the chapel door on Chamberlain Street. Some of them date from the 15th century. |

A lot has been happening in the Heads Up garden recently. The forever keen 'gardening crew' have built a new shed and composters, thanks to funding from Tesco Bags of Help.

Today, Arboculturist, Ian Chedgy, came to Heads Up and kindly gave a talk about trees and took clients, staff and volunteers on a short walk. It was a most interesting experience.

Memories Garden finished and in use !!
01 Jun 17
The Heads Up Memories garden has been completed and has been occupied and enjoyed by memories clients whom have taken advantage of the recent hot spells of weather.
The slide show below shows various stages of the construction work in progress. It is fantastic that clients (in addition to a few volunteers) have produced a lovely facility for other clients to make use of and enjoy.
A huge Thank You goes out to the people and organisations who made the project possible through donations and fundraising and also to the clients and volunteers whom put in many hours of hard graft and effort constructing the garden.

More photographs will be added as work continues
Heads Up appreciates the money donated towards the project via sponsorship and fund raising. Thank you for all donations made !!
Gardeners have been apple picking and thanked with delicious pies and crumbles made by the cookery group. Sampling the yummy puddings created from our home grown produce, is so rewarding and made the hard work growing and nurturing the fruit and veg so worthwhile !!!
Plenty of produce has been grown in the Heads Up garden this year including runner beans, tomatoes, chillies and these amazing leeks! The photos of some of the fruit and veg grown by the Heads Up gardeners are testament to the fantastic achievement from their efforts.
We try not to forget to smell the roses....in the Heads Up Garden. The sweet aroma from the plants, coupled with being outside in the fresh air on a fine day makes gardening so enjoyable. What's better though, is seeing the brilliant results that hours of hard work has produced, as well as raising funds for Heads Up through selling some of our fruit and veg.

Heads Up Obelisk
23/06/2016
The Heads Up obelisk was one of the main features in the award winning Heads Up “pop- up garden” at the recent Royal Bath and West Show. The obelisk will now become a feature of the new Memory Garden being created at Heads Up.
The obelisk took approximately 3 weeks to make and all the workshops at Heads Up contributed. Tutor Keith constructed the wooden structure, Volunteer Kellie and Tutors Lisa and Sally helped create the mosaic and clients added “words” or phrases inspired by their attendance at Heads Up. The mosaic would not have been possible without Kellie, one of Heads Up volunteers – who not only brought her skill of mosaic making to Heads Up, but shared it with Lisa and Sally – Thanks Kellie.

Royal Garden Party Invite: May 2016
26/4/2016
In recognition of the success of the Heads Up Healing Garden, Garden Co-ordinator Lee-Anne has been invited to the Queens Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, taking place in May. Lee-Anne said "it is an honour to be invited although creating and maintaining the garden is a real team effort". She will not only have a cucumber sandwich or two but will also have an opportunity to visit the gardens at the Palace - Lee-Anne will try hard not to be tempted to take a cutting or two for the Heads Up garden.

Garden Volunteer Update by Garden Coordinator, Lee-Anne
25/01/2016
'Thank you to all the garden volunteers who, despite the very soggy winter weather, have continued to work hard to make improvements to the Healing Garden.
The team's achievements have included refurbishing the wildlife pond, demolishing the rotten raised beds in the car park and constructing new ones, and building bug hotels and bat boxes for sale in the spring to help raise funds.
I would also like to express my appreciation to all who have offered to help with the Heads Up pop up garden which will be built at the Bath and West Show this June – watch this space!'
